Blue Marlin Bite 9 Miles- Sept 17, 2016
The Capt decided to take the day off and have see for himself since the charters are slow this month. We have a nice blue water pocket sitting just 9 miles from the house. Since the moment the water changed from green to blue we put the lines out with 8 other local charter boats. The days before most boats had no problem seeing 3-4 marlin a boat, and most were returning at noon!
While the sails pitch didn't have the hum (just saw 2 blues), for the first time in a while I hooked a nice blue marlin off the rigger bait in the first 20 minutes. 30 lb tackle with a fish over 300 lbs kicked my butt! Very strange to see a bigger marlin smoke the rigger bait, they were hungry!!
We then saw just 1 more that wouldn't bite, but Capt Manolo next to us was on fire. He went 5 for 6 on blues! Releasing 3 sailfish as well.
Before 9 am, there were over 20 marlin bites reported between 8 boats!!! At 9 miles, all about a 2 mile squared area.
This year as a whole since last November has proven to be the best year for both marlin and of course sailfish, as I personally close in on 35 blues for the year.
We ended the day-
6-5-5 Sailfish
2-1-1 Blue Marlin
1-1-1 Mahi

Hot marlin fishing right now in Guatemala. The usually summer months are producing incredible marlin fishing. Best part of all, its just 17 miles to the east. Usually we have been find the blues under the thick patches of mahi mahi. A bit further offshore we were getting into Sailfish as well.
Our final results for marlin on July 23, 2016- 4-2-2 Blue Marlin (one around 400 lbs).
Sailfish- 4-4-2
Mahi Mahi- 12 (8-15 lb range)
Only lodge fishing these days, and we got the whole ocean to ourself!
July-Sept marks a great blue marlin time. Quickly being known as the summertime blues of Guatemala.
We had a short day charter, in by 2pm and just 16-18 miles offshore to east. Very good blue water, calm, plenty of mahi as well as sailfish in the mix. First blue marlin wouldn't tease in, last half hour of the day we had a nice blue crash the short poisition teaser, and in a matter of seconds the small tuna pitch bait was deployed. The blue was tight and released on the 50 lb rig. Just under 200 lbs.
Total Day Tally:
12-10-9 Sailfish
2-1-1 Blue Marlin
4 Mahi Mahi
Into August the blues will get bigger and more frequent if history repeats itself. Last year we had many 8-12 raise days and BIG blues around 500lbs.
More to come as we fish this friday. Tight Lines,
Capt Chris Starrs
Proof once again, that Guatemala is a year round fishery. In fact May to July means short runs, BIG blues, mahi mahi for the whole village & of course sailfish.
The Blue Bayou Lodge will be doing more and more medical mission group day charters. Which means we will fish the ''off months''.
Yesterdays results.
30-28-25 Sailfish
1-1-1 Blue Marlin (around 300 lbs)
The best part of all, 15 miles!!! Not bad for the off months.
Water temps are even more favorable this time of year, inviting blue marlin as well in the 85 degree range.

HOLA ANGLERS!
May continues to be one of our favorite months. Just like last year this time, the sailfish are all over, as well as blue marlin and mahi.
We can get used to fish tacos from a fish swimming 30 minutes ago!
