Bring on April!
First portion of April was more about the meat than anything. BIG mahi, nice yellow fin and with luck you'd see just about 15 sails in the spread most days, a marlin here and there. Most days we would be live baiting on some loaded down logs or debris. We do it all.
Finally mid April the bite went off (or recovered) and we were the ones who stumbled upon them. Offshore to the west, off the ledge we had our first 40 bite day in while. From there on, it got GOOD. Boats are having no problem even seeing 60 fish behind he boat! Ndow that's what Guatemala is known for.
Just last week we even had a double header (same time) a sailfish and blue marlin with a family from FL. Many families traveling throughout the region taking advantage of cheap air fare, no crowds and great fishing. The great thing about lean charters for all the outfitters here is the lack of pressure on the fish. You can't beat Guatemala and how much water you have to yourself. In general this fishing gets no pressure.

The first portion of March was very good. Better days of 40 shots at sailfish, as well as tuna in the 50-90 lb range. We are still running a good 40 miles one way to the western ledge but it's worth it. Go where the fish are! The better fishing comes in waves. The 3rd week of March slowed down. Top days maybe 20 shots at sails, but BIG mahi in the mix, yellowfin tuna fishing once you find the spinners is also productive. Our biggest challenge is green water stirred up after a few days of tough wind in the region. Once that settles down the currents move it out and hopefully bring in the good stuff with fish.
Fishing has been solid right up the gut of the pock. Just 25 miles many boats are seeing 40-50 bite days on sailfish and a very nice blue marlin fishery! Offshore on the same line you can expect to find big tunas with more sailfish and marlin in the mix as well. As you can see you better have a Capt at the helm using terrafin or you can be in fishless green water all day on either side. Knowledge is power! This Friday & Saturday we will be fishing hard with some friends from Lousiana. Above is a nice sail we got with our group last week. Fished a half day with 20 sailfish bites and some mahi mahi. As we begin to open up operations, we are greeted with one of the better Octs we have seen in a while. This 2020 fall has been posting numbers well into the 60 to 70 bite days on sailfish! As well as the expected blue marlin bite and some BIG 100 plus LB tuna further offshore.
We start fishing this week finally.
Travel has resumed to normal for the most part. It was a hold out we hope will never repeat itself. However, the show must go on and we are ready to rock once again. Many improvements to our lodge & vessels. We look forward to 2021 season. The most famous dock in the world is starting to fill up.

This quarantine is taking its toll. To have such a great fishery and not be able to fish is probably the worse part. This is 100% why I live in Guatemala and I can't even do what I came here to do. I guess join the club.
These boats need to run all the time to avoid issues, so my oldest Daughter and I have been sneaking out with special permission to check on our fish!
Keep in mind Guatemala has a 4pm curfew. So these are also basically half day reports. The stocks are stacking as mother nature reclaims what's hers.
REPORT
2 day report. We fished 1 week apart, day trips only. To keep our sanity.
2 weeks ago. At just 14 miles.
We found the sailfish bite. Bonitas, jelly fish for days.
27-21-14 sailfish, 1-0-0 marlin, 2-1-1 Mahi and home by noon. The main thing we wanted showed up as the last fish as we hooked a nice mahi mahi for dinner.
April 26th- A week later, we went offshore to the east to try a new spot. Trying to find logs for mahi as we need FOOD. We were greeted by one of the better yellow fin tuna days I've had in a while. At one point these fish were shouldering on the surface ONLY biting surface poppers. NOT just a billfish fishery. Very exciting.
We ended up with 9 yellow fin around 40 lbs. Missed a half dozen sails on the tuna gear. Great day out and enough table fare to get us through another week plus.
